I am excited to introduce myself as your child’s 8th-grade homeroom and/or mathematics teacher and Algebra Liaison for this school year! My name is Ms. Moody, the 8th grade Mathematics teacher and Algebra Liaison.  Welcome to the 2025-26 school year at Joseph Lovett "where our students love it at Lovett!Ms. Brown is the 8th grade Reading and Civics teacher. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure your child’s success as they prepare for graduation.

Elementary School Promotion Policy

CPS makes elementary school promotion decisions during the second week of June for students in grades 2, 5, and 8. Promotion status is based on student academic performance as reflected by the final reading (2, 5, & 8th grade), math (5 & 8th grade only), science (5 & 8th grade only), and social science (5 & 8th grade only) report card grades.  Students who do not meet promotion criteria will be required to attend and satisfactorily complete Summer Bridge in order to be promoted to the next grade.

Reading, Mathematics and Civics Graduation Requirements

8th grade students must receive a letter grade of C or higher in both Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science to be eligible for graduation in June. 8th grade students must also receive a grade of C or higher in Art, Music, and P.E.  We encourage students to put forth their best effort throughout the year to meet these requirements. Civics is a critical course that covers the United States Constitution and is required for graduation. The Civics class runs from August through December. Please be aware that if your child receives below a C in Civics, they will not meet the requirements for graduation in June.

Grading Scale

The grading scale for all courses is as follows:

- A: 100% – 90%

- B: 89% – 80%

- C: 79% – 70%

Uniform Policy:

Lovett is a uniform school. Students are expected to be in navy blue pants and a navy blue polo each day.  Leggings, stretch pants, jogging pants, yoga pants, and jeggings are not acceptable. Hoodies are not allowed to be worn in the classroom. As the weather changes, students can wear sweaters, jean jackets, or similar cold weather clothing as long as they are still following the uniform guidelines. Students are not allowed to wear:  Hoodies or jackets with a hood, hair scarves or bonnets, flip flops, crocs, slides or house shoes.

Cell Phone Policy:

Technology (cell phones, airpods, apple watches, etc.) can be brought to school, HOWEVER they must be turned into the homeroom teacher upon arrival. I, personally, have a locked phone tower that I will keep students' electronics in and return at dismissal (3:45 pm). We do this to help keep our students safe and focused throughout the school day. Please know that you can always call the school, there are two phones in the classroom, or me personally, if you need to speak to your child or staff member during school hours.  If you have any questions about the cell phone policy please speak with Principal Campbell.

Our Commitment to Your Child’s Success

We are committed to helping your child thrive academically. Here are five ways we plan to support their success:

  1. Clear Expectations: We will provide clear guidelines for assignments, projects, and class expectations to help your child stay on track.
  2. Consistent Communication: We will keep you informed about your child’s progress through regular updates, and we encourage open communication if you have any concerns.
  3. Academic Support: We will offer extra help through study sessions and one-on-one assistance for students who need additional support.
  4. Time Management Skills: We will emphasize the importance of organization, planning, and meeting deadlines to help your child manage their workload effectively.
  5. Positive Learning Environment: We will create a classroom atmosphere where students feel respected, motivated, and encouraged to do their best.

Late Work Policy

We understand that sometimes situations arise that may prevent a student from turning in work on time. However, to build responsibility, we ask that students submit assignments by their due dates. We will accept late work up to seven days after the due date, but the highest score a student can receive for late work is 75%.  If there are special circumstances, please contact us directly to discuss.

Academic Integrity

Please note that plagiarism or cheating will result in an automatic grade of 0%. Academic integrity is essential, and we want to ensure that students understand the value of doing their own work.

We are looking forward to a productive and successful year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or need assistance.

8th Grade Parent Meeting

In a few weeks, we will be hosting a parent meeting for 8th grade parents and their students.  Please be on the lookout for written communication.

Thank you for your support, and let’s work together to make this a great year for your child!

Sincerely,

Ms. Moody
